Les has been elected to the State Board of Directors for the California Association of Mortgage Brokers (CAMB) since 2004. He has represented California mortgage lenders in meetings in Washington, and in Sacramento. Les Berman has been certified by the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB) and CAMB to teach the "Shedding Light on Credit Scoring" class in California. He also teaches continuing education classes for attorneys, certified financial planners, certified public accountants, and DRE licensees. He is a national speaker at diverse venues including NAMB conventions, the National Association of Remodelers convention, the Xerox Employees Association, and local colleges.
Les Berman earned the Certified Mortgage Consultant (CMC) award from the National Association of Mortgage Brokers. This is the highest honor designated in the mortgage industry and since its inception about six years ago; fewer than 225 individuals have received the CMC Award. He has also earned the Certified Mortgage Planner (CMP) designation.
Les was an Executive Vice President, Canadian origination for one of the largest mortgage bankers in the US in the early 1980's. He was involved in one of the largest public offerings of tax credits in Canadian history.
Les Berman is an acknowledged expert in the mortgage field. He is frequently interviewed on TV and radio as a mortgage industry expert and was recently quoted by Associated Press nationally, by CBS Radio, "Smart Money" Magazine, a publication of the Wall Street Journal, Mortgage Pulse West and other mortgage publications. He was also featured in a series of ads with American Express.
During a side trip from the mortgage industry, Les Berman was involved in two dot com companies; one was structured to transact low cost simple divorces and low cost bankruptcies over the internet. Les learned many of the intricacies of the bankruptcy system and became expert in structuring an individual’s recovery, both credit and financial aspects, from the bankruptcy. Prior to the change in the tax laws in 2005, Les was consulting with potential bankruptcy petitioners to assist them in structuring their petition. One of his passions is helping people recover from bankruptcy.
He co-authored, with Ron Quintero, "From Bankruptcy to Prosperity". Les also functions as an expert witness in mortgage related issues in family law cases.
Les Berman has been involved in and consulted on many different businesses through the years, yet he always has the most fun in the mortgage industry. He does not know of any other business where he can make so many people so happy by giving them someone else’s money, and over the years, he has made people happy to the tune of almost a billion dollars!
